Northeast Radio SD News â Watertown, SD - In a move aimed at transforming the economic landscape of the I-29 corridor, co-founders Michael Klatt and Angie Yahne officially introduced StartUp Watertown during a live broadcast with Northeast Radio SD on Monday. The initiative, born from a partnership with Sister Barb Youngers and the Mother of God Monastery, seeks to provide a permanent home for innovation, education, and community-driven business growth.
A Vision Rooted in History
Co-founder Michael Klatt reflected on the regionâs economic evolution, noting that todayâs Watertown is a far cry from the rural-focused, job-limited environment of the 1980s.
âI experienced Watertown in the 1980s... when the drought of 1976 occurred, and interest rates spiked over 18%. That was a very difficult time in this area,â Klatt shared. âWatertown has to have a culture of creating jobs and helping companies advance themselves. Once you stop doing that, communities can quickly get complacent or worseâdie.â
Klatt emphasized that the I-29 corridor, stretching from Fargo to Sioux City, is poised for explosive growth over the next three decades, and StartUp Watertown is designed to ensure the local community is at the forefront of that movement.
The Incubator: More Than Just Office Space
The heart of the project is a âbusiness incubatorâ located at the local monastery. Designed to mimic the collaborative âWeWorkâ model, the facility offers a professional environment for those moving their businesses out of garages and basements.
The space includes:
An Atrium and Kitchenette for networking and casual collaboration.
A Boardroom for formal presentations and meetings.
Administrative and IT Support to reduce overhead costs for new owners.
âMany companies start in the garage or the basement,â Yahne explained. âWe want to provide that next stepâa space where they can get education, resources, and support.â
A Pipeline for Success
A key component of StartUp Watertown is its synergy with existing resources. Angie Yahne noted that the organization works closely with Dr. Melissa Meidinger at the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to ensure entrepreneurs are fully prepared before seeking capital.
The âSuccess Pipelineâ generally follows this path:
The Idea: An entrepreneur approaches the SBDC or StartUp Watertown.
The Foundation: Working with Dr. Meidinger to build business plans and financial projections.
The Launch: Returning to StartUp Watertown for help with funding, banking relationships, and scaling.
Empowering the Next Generation
Beyond established professionals, the founders are looking toward the futureâspecifically, students at Lake Area Technical College (LATC) and local high schools. Michael Klatt highlighted the need to shift vocational students' mindset from âemployeesâ to âowners.â
âSo many people go with the idea, âIâm going to go be a welder,ââ Klatt said. âMaybe the idea is really that they want to own a welding shop. We want to have those conversations very early on, so when they think about their future education, they are thinking about running a business.â
Next Steps for the Community
StartUp Watertown is currently in its own âstartup phase,â actively recruiting board members and finalizing its digital presence. The organization is inviting local bankers, business leaders, and entrepreneurs to participate in its upcoming workshops, which will include programs such as EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System) and Co-Starters.
For those interested in getting involved or seeking support for their business idea, Angie Yahne can be reached via the Watertown Development Company or through the newly launched StartUp Watertown social media pages.

Northeast Radio SD News â Watertown, SD - The future of South Dakota retail isnât just about what is on the shelves; itâs about the community and innovation behind the counter. In a recent episode of Northeast Radio SDâs âWe Believe in Business,â leaders from the South Dakota Retailers Association (SDRA) and local entrepreneurs gathered to discuss the success of the inaugural Next Gen Business Builders cohort.
A New Chapter for Small Business
The Next Gen program was born from a desire to bridge the gap for early-stage entrepreneurs. Brooke Bohnenkamp, Deputy Executive Director of the SDRA, explained that the initiative focuses on professional development and networking for those navigating the critical first years of business ownership.
âWe really wanted a way to nurture early-stage business owners and provide them an opportunity to network with others in the same stage of the game,â said Bohnenkamp. The program, which consists of six meetings over a year, has already exceeded expectations, launching with 18 members despite an initial goal of 12.
From Products to Experiences
Among those leading the charge is Lisa Converse, owner of Element in Watertown. Converse, who has been self-employed for 30 years, highlighted a significant shift in consumer behavior. Her business has pivoted toward a âmicro-eventâ and experience-based model, focusing on high-quality charcuterie and intimate gatherings.
âPeople really are about the experience lately, and not so much about things,â Converse noted. She also emphasized the evolving challenge of marketing, noting the jump from phone books to TikTok over her three-decade career. Her advice to those hesitating to start? âGrowth comes from being uncomfortable. Take that leap.â
Overcoming the âBack Endâ Hurdle
For many new owners, the passion for their product is often met with the daunting reality of business administration. Bailey Meyer, of Northern Edge Marketing in Webster, serves clients across the Midwest but finds immense value in the SDRAâs local support system.
âItâs the back end that ties us downâtaxes, legislation, the things we arenât always âinto,ââ Meyer shared. âHaving access to people who know what is going on and where to find information is invaluable.â Meyer encourages aspiring owners to stop waiting for perfect self-confidence and to âdo it,â leaning on the community for support.
Looking Ahead
As the first cohort progresses through deep dives into AI, HR, and marketing, the SDRA is already looking ahead.
Applications for the next cohort: Expected to open in September 2026.
Program Structure: A mix of in-person and virtual sessions designed to be accessible without being a burden on busy schedules.

Northeast Radio SD News â Watertown, SD - On Thursday, April 9th, a small building in downtown Watertown will open its doors for an event that aims to make a global impact. Fallout Shelter Ministries is partnering with Daylight United for an exclusive âDinner and Acoustic Nightâ to raise funds for the ongoing battle against human trafficking, domestic violence, and sexual assault.
The event, held at the Fallout Shelterâs ministry center at 10 Second Street SE, promises an evening of fine dining and world-class music, limited to just 60 guests. Attendees will enjoy a steak dinner with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans, topped off with a local favorite: Kyle Lallemâs signature chocolate cake from The Local.
Providing the soundtrack for the night is the award-winning band Remedy Drive. Lead singer David Zach and guitarist Dave Moore will perform an intimate acoustic set. For Zach, this mission is personal; he often goes undercover globally to investigate brothels and help rescue victims of human trafficking.
A Partnership for Freedom
Rich Ohm, a former law enforcement officer and a key figure at Fallout Shelter Ministries, emphasized that the collaboration with Daylight United is a natural fit. While Daylight United focuses on global investigations, Fallout Shelter Ministries acts as a âsafety netâ for the local community.
âDaylight Unitedâs whole purpose is anti-trafficking,â Ohm explained during a recent interview on Northeast Radio SD. âDavid Zach actually goes undercover and does investigations in brothels in Thailand and around the world. We support them in that, and they support us in what we do here.â
The âSafety Netâ of Watertown
Fallout Shelter Ministries has become a multifaceted resource for Watertown and beyond. From training 37,000 people in self-defense across 15 countries to providing emergency housing and Friday night church services, the organization seeks to meet people exactly where they are.
Ohm noted that their philosophy is rooted in addressing fundamental human needs. âWe try to help people in that bottom tier of Maslowâs hierarchy,â Ohm said. âAre they safe? Are they hungry? Are they warm? Last summer, we gave away ten tents and sleeping bags to homeless people right here.â
Beyond basic needs, the ministry focuses on long-term transformation. Ohm spoke passionately about the shift from victimization to resilience. âWe want to change people from being victims to being survivors. When youâre a victim, your identity is built on that pain. When youâre a survivor, thatâs something that happened to me, but itâs not who I am.â
A Call to Vigilance
With his background in law enforcement, Ohm also used the platform to educate the public on the signs of trafficking, noting that it often happens closer to home than many realize through âgroomingâ or the âRomeo and Julietâ ruse.
âIf you see something that weirds you out, tell somebody,â Ohm urged. âIf you see a young girl who doesnât quite seem right, or someone being watched too closely at a gas station, report it. The National Human Trafficking Hotline is a great resource, but you can always contact us too.â
A Labor of Love
Perhaps most striking is the commitment of the ministryâs leadership. Ohm revealed that neither he nor the director has ever taken a paycheck from the ministry, ensuring that funds go directly toward their programs and the people they serve.
âGodâs just provided what we need on and on and on,â Ohm said. âWe rely on people being enthusiastic about what we do to support our mission.â
Tickets for the April 9th fundraiser are expected to sell out quickly due to the limited 60-seat capacity. Interested parties can find more information and purchase tickets on the Fallout Shelter Ministries Facebook page or at falloutshelterministries.com.

đď¸ Watertown Seeking New Downtown Leadership
The Downtown Watertown Collective is officially hunting for a new Downtown Collective Director. This "primary connector and catalyst" role goes beyond event planning, focusing on long-term economic sustainability and growth.
Key Responsibilities: Managing community staples like the Soup Stroll, Pumpkin-palooza, and Art Walk, along with business engagement and marketing.
Ideal Candidate: A self-directed entrepreneur with strong relationship-building skills.
How to Apply: Submit a resume and cover letter via the article at NortheastRadioSD.com.
đĽ Query Fire Nears Full Containment
Firefighting efforts near Custer are entering the final phase.
Status: The 9,168-acre blaze is now 70% contained.
Transition: Control is being handed over from the Type 3 Interagency Team to a local Type 4 operation.
Resident Access: Residents are allowed back into the area but must possess an Orange Card issued by Custer County Emergency Management.
Closures: Segments of Lower French Creek Road and Highway 87 remain closed. Drone use is strictly prohibited in the area to avoid disrupting air operations.
đ Housing: Harmony Hill Subdivision Approved
The Watertown Planning Commission has greenlit a new tax increment financing (TIF) district for the Harmony Hill Subdivision.
The Project: Developed by CSCI Development on land tied to the Mother of God Monastery, the project will bring 40 affordable single-family homes to the community.
Pricing: Homes are projected to stay under $300,000, meeting South Dakota Housing Development Authority limits.
Infrastructure: $2.1 million in TIF funding will cover streets, water, and sewer, with the financial risk sitting solely with the developer.
đ§ Zoning & Development Updates
The Watertown Board of Adjustment handled several key local requests:
Sidewalk Waiver: A temporary waiver was granted to Kumpf-Esco Builders for a new shop in the Southeast Industrial Corridor. A sidewalk won't be required until the surrounding neighborhood is ready for a connected pedestrian system.
Lake Kampeska Expansion: Jason and Stephanie Leonards received a variance for a 48-foot garage extension at 434 South Lake Drive. The board prioritized maintaining the home's 1957 architectural footprint over modern setback requirements.
Alleyway Apartment: A former tattoo parlor at 24 Midway Alley will be converted into a residential unit. While the city usually prohibits ground-level residential units downtown to save retail space, an exception was made due to its location in an alley rather than a main storefront.
