The "Adopt-A-Grand" project serves a dual purpose: it acts as a community outreach initiative to combat loneliness in nursing homes and a fundraiser to help Encore Athletics athletes afford the high costs of competitive cheer travel.
Key Program Details
Target Goal: To have all 270 residents in the five partner nursing homes "adopted" by Valentine's Day.
The Athlete Experience: Beyond raising money, the girls gain "sweat equity" by hand-making cards and performing their routines live for the seniors.
Nursing Home Partners: The program currently serves Harmony Hill, StonyBrook Suites, Avantara, Edgewood, and Jenkins Living Center.
Athlete Spotlight: The Roles of Cheer
The video highlights the diverse skills and dedication required in modern competitive cheer, moving far beyond the "pom-poms and kicks" of the past:
The Flyers: Athletes like Ashton, Cammi, and Maddie who are lifted and tossed into the air. They noted that while the "pressure is on" during stunts, the adrenaline makes it their favorite part of the sport.
The Bases: The "powerhouses" like Lily and Samara who provide the foundation and safety for the flyers. They emphasized the deep trust and teamwork required to make a stunt "hit."
The Prep: The teams often spend nearly two hours on hair and makeup before a performance, with older girls acting as "cheer sisters" to mentor and help the younger athletes.
Upcoming Competitions
The funds raised will support the team's travel to prestigious events, including:
The Deep South: A high-production competition featuring "tunnels, smoke, and massive mascots" that the girls cited as a program favorite.
National Trips: Upcoming travel to Wisconsin and Alabama.

Sawyer Craig of Castlewood stopped by the studio to share exciting news for local conservation and hunting enthusiasts. Craig has spearheaded the creation of the first high school chapter of Ducks Unlimited in South Dakota, demonstrating exceptional initiative for a student-led organization.

During the interview, Sawyer explained how his interest in Ducks Unlimited began after his sister's lacrosse coach, a regional director for the organization, noticed his passion for the outdoors. That spark led to the formation of the Castlewood Varsity Ducks Unlimited chapter, which now includes six dedicated members from both Castlewood and Watertown.

The Big Event: The chapter is hosting its inaugural fundraising banquet, the Castlewood Varsity DU Dinner, to support wetlands conservation.

When: Friday, February 6th
Where: Tables Steakhouse in Castlewood
Time: Doors open at 5:30 PM, Dinner at 6:30 PM
Tickets: Single tickets are $30, couples are $50, and student tickets are just $15. Sponsorship tables are also available.
Highlights from the Studio:

Goose & Duck Calling: Sawyer wowed the hosts with his impressive duck and goose calling skills live on air—no decoys required!
Passion for the Hunt: Sawyer shared his love for waterfowl hunting, explaining the thrill of calling birds in and the connection with nature and friends.

Community Impact: Proceeds from the dinner go back into wetlands conservation, which directly benefits the local habitats hunters enjoy.
State Celebration: The chapter will also be recognized at the upcoming Ducks Unlimited state celebration in Watertown on January 30th.

For those interested in tickets or getting involved, Sawyer recommends scanning the QR code on their flyers or contacting his dad at 605-880-2747.
It’s great to see young leaders like Sawyer stepping up to preserve South Dakota’s outdoor heritage!

Big things are happening for the Watertown Figure Skate Club! We were thrilled to have Coach Taylor Johnson in the studio this morning, along with skaters Abby Reeves, Savanna Sovell, and Madison Johnson, to catch up on their huge success and see what’s next for the team.

Mitchell Ice Palace Recap: The team is fresh off a trip to Mitchell, South Dakota, for the Ice Palace competition. It wasn’t held at the Corn Palace, but the results were just as spectacular. The Watertown crew had an incredible
showing, bringing home over 30 Gold Medals from just that single weekend!

For some skaters, including the club's exchange student from Germany, it was their first time seeing the Corn Palace, adding a little sightseeing to the victory lap.

Road to Nationals The skaters are hard at work qualifying for the National Showcase, which will be held in Denver, Colorado, this August. The qualifying process is rigorous—skaters like Madison have already qualified for five different events. They aren't slowing down either; next Thursday, about 20 local families are heading north to Minot, North Dakota.

This upcoming competition will feature Canadian teams, giving our local skaters a chance to compete on an international level and benchmark their scores before Nationals.

More Than Just Skating The group broke down the different categories they compete in, proving figure skating is as much about performance as it is about athletics:

Comedic: Routines designed to make the judges laugh, featuring everything from "Weird Al" Yankovic tracks to skating in a full Sumo wrestler suit!

Emotional: Performances where skaters must deeply connect with the music.
Character: Portraying icons from movies and pop culture (think Barbie, Ghostbusters, or Aladdin).

The Watertown Area Chamber of Commerce has officially launched a fundraising campaign titled "Thursday Night Live: A Future We Share," aiming to address rising operational costs and ensure the longevity of the beloved summer concert series.
In a recent radio appearance, Chamber President and CEO Tim Sheehan and Director of Ag and Engagement Mackenzie Ries outlined the financial challenges facing the event. While "Thursday Night Live" has grown significantly since the Chamber took over operations in 2018—moving from downtown to the new Foundation Plaza—the cost of entertainment has skyrocketed.
"Back then the bands were $500, maybe $700," Sheehan explained. "Our average band cost is now about $3,000, and that’s with our sound."
Last year, despite cutting the series down to eight events, the Chamber reported $36,000 in expenses and an $11,000 deficit, figures that do not account for staff time. To bridge this gap, the new campaign seeks to raise $30,000. This fund will not only cover immediate costs for upcoming seasons but also provide a financial cushion for future years.
"We ARE having Thursday Night Live for 2026," Ries assured the community. "We're just asking for the community's help to share some of these costs and to keep it moving forward."
How to Donate Community members can donate via the Chamber’s website at watertownsd.com, through Venmo, or by mailing a check. The campaign features various contribution tiers with perks such as branded travel mugs and lawn chairs.
Sheehan also encouraged local businesses to consider sponsorships. By pooling smaller community donations, the Chamber hopes to lower the barrier for business sponsorships, potentially allowing companies to secure a $1,500-level exposure for a $500 investment. Sponsors gain opportunities to set up booths and engage directly with the 800 to 1,500 attendees that gather at the Plaza each week.
Upcoming Events: Winter Farm Show & Burger Battle In addition to the fundraising launch, the Chamber highlighted the 81st Annual Winter Farm Show, taking place February 11-14 at the Extension building. The event will feature 177 cattle, a Lego contest, and free admission. A free shuttle service, provided by a Lake Area mini-bus, will run daily from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Residents are also reminded to participate in the ongoing 4th Annual Burger Battle, running through February 28, featuring 19 local burgers.
Detailed Summary
Topic: Thursday Night Live (TNL) Fundraising Campaign
The Challenge: Since taking over TNL in 2018, the Chamber has seen band costs triple, rising from ~$700 to an average of $3,000 per act. Last year, the event incurred $36,000 in hard expenses, resulting in an $11,000 loss.
The Campaign: The "A Future We Share" campaign aims to raise $30,000. This fund is intended to subsidize costs for 2026 and sustain the event for future years.
How to Support:
Individuals: Donations are accepted via Venmo, check, or online at watertownsd.com. Perks include branded lawn chairs and travel mugs.
Businesses: The Chamber is seeking creative sponsorship deals. A new strategy involves using community funds to subsidize sponsorship costs, allowing businesses to get $1,500 worth of exposure for a $500 contribution. Sponsors can set up booths to engage with the large weekly crowds.
Topic: 81st Annual Winter Farm Show
Dates & Location: February 11–14 at the Extension Building.
Key Features:
Free Admission & Shuttle: The event is free to attend. A free Lake Area mini-bus shuttle will transport attendees from their cars to the building.
Attractions: Exhibits open 9 AM – 4 PM daily. Features include 177 cattle, livestock shows, and a youth Lego contest (registration closing soon).
Cracker Barrel Session: A legislative session will be held on Saturday, Feb 14 at 8:00 AM sharp in the sale ring, featuring representatives from Districts 4 and 5.
Topic: Other Community Events
Burger Battle: The 4th Annual Burger Battle is currently active through February 28, with 19 local burgers competing for the title.
Cookin' on Kampeska: The lineup for the upcoming festival is expected to be finalized by next week and is touted as one of the "best lineups" in recent history.

Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - Northern Prairie Arts (NPA) is launching a diverse series of “Create Classes” this spring, offering residents the chance to explore everything from cutting-edge technology to the craft of a perfect cocktail. Ralph Wamsher of NPA recently shared the upcoming schedule during a “community first” interview on Northeast Radio SD, emphasizing the organization’s mission to provide events that are both “creative and fun.”
Writing in the Digital Age
The season kicks off on Saturday, January 31, with “A.I. ~ Your Unpredictable Writing Buddy”. Held at Lake Area Technical College (LATC), the workshop features local author KT Webb, who has written numerous books, including The Evolved and the Chicago Love Stories series.
The course is designed to help writers navigate the modern landscape of artificial intelligence without losing their unique voice.
Overcoming Block: The class teaches writers how to use AI to break through creative ruts and generate ideas.
Editing and Vocabulary: Sessions will cover how to use AI tools for editing and expanding vocabulary.
The “Anti-Hijack” Approach: Webb emphasizes using AI as a collaborator rather than a replacement, ensuring it doesn’t “hijack” the story.
Mixology and Heritage Crafts
In February and March, the focus shifts to hands-on, tactile arts:
Mixology 101: On Saturday, February 7, from 2–4 p.m., Patrick “The Jigger Engineer” Anderson will host a session at Dempsey’s ATY @ the Airport. Participants (age 21+) will learn to craft classic cocktails—many originally created to mask the taste of spirits during Prohibition—and will even get to step behind the bar to mix their own drinks.
Wood Carving 101: Starting March 3, NPA will host a three-night wood carving course on consecutive Tuesdays. Led by Steve Hunter of Toronto, SD, the class covers safety and basic techniques, with all tools provided in the registration cost.
Arts Night at the Pub
NPA’s long-standing tradition, Arts Night at the Pub, continues on the second Thursday of every month at Dempsey’s.
February Theme: The upcoming theme for February 12 is “Taking Flight,” inviting artists to submit works ranging from photography and painting to poetry and video that interpret the theme in any creative way.
March Guest: The March event will feature author Lisa Green (writing under the pen name Lisa M. Green), who will discuss her historical fiction and coming-of-age novels.
Registration for all events is open at northernprairiearts.org. NPA remains a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to highlighting local artists and providing affordable cultural opportunities for all ages.

Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - In an era where parenting challenges and mental health needs are increasingly complex, the Human Service Agency (HSA) is stepping up to ensure no family in the Northeast South Dakota region has to navigate these hurdles alone.
In a recent “community first” sit-down, Clinical Director Heather Stricherz and Systems of Care Coordinators Ally Helle and Haley Moeller shed light on the agency’s mission to provide “educational, not just therapeutic” support to families. Serving a six-county area—including Codington, Grant, Roberts, Clark, Deuel, and Hamlin—the HSA operates as both an accredited community mental health center and a support provider for those with developmental disabilities.
A Holistic Approach to Family Success
The “Systems of Care” program is specifically designed for families with children and young adults aged 0 to 21. Unlike traditional clinical models that focus solely on the individual, HSA emphasizes working with the entire household.
“We focus on progress, not perfection,” said Stricherz. “Nobody is broken. You may be a little bit bent, but you’re not broken. We look at those small steps and celebrate the heck out of them.”
The program is uniquely “strength-based,” helping families identify what they are doing right rather than focusing only on what is going wrong. Coordinators Ally Helle and Haley Moeller work hand in hand with clients, providing mentorship for youth, parenting guidance, and support in navigating complex systems such as the court or school districts.
Removing the Barriers to Help
One of the most significant revelations from the team was the accessibility of these services. The Systems of Care and Children, Youth, and Families programs are provided at no cost to families.
“We really try our best to make it so finances are not a barrier,” Stricherz noted, adding that outpatient funding is also available for adults without insurance.
For many, the biggest hurdle isn’t money—it’s the stigma of asking. Coordinator Ally Helle, who joined the agency driven by her own childhood experiences, emphasized that the goal is to walk alongside families during overwhelming moments. “People don’t realize they already have the knowledge and tools to reach their goals. They just need that support piece.”
When to Reach Out
The agency encourages anyone feeling “lost” or “overwhelmed” by life’s curveballs to reach out—not as a last resort, but as a proactive measure. Whether it is a new parent struggling with a toddler or a young adult (up to age 21) needing guidance to enter the workforce, the HSA is positioned as a “one-stop shop” for community wellness.
As Stricherz aptly put it: “Normal is only a setting on a washing machine. Everybody’s baseline is different.”

Northeast Radio SD News - Watertown, SD - The Watertown Lakers Hockey Association is experiencing a surge in local participation and community engagement, fueled by the state-of-the-art Prairie Lakes Ice Arena.
During the latest segment of “A Look at the Lakers” on Northeast Radio SD, Watertown Hockey Association leaders shared how the program is expanding its reach while maintaining a deep commitment to volunteerism and community service.
A Culture of Volunteerism and Development
Unlike many school-sanctioned sports, the Watertown Lakers operate as a club sport, meaning the organization is almost entirely dependent on parent volunteers.
Todd Randall, President of the Watertown Lakers, emphasized that the organization is “only as good as our backbone—and that’s our parents.”
Lowering Barriers: To make hockey more accessible, the Lakers participate in the NHL/NHLPA “Learn to Play” initiative. This program provides first-time players with a full set of head-to-toe gear and professional coaching, which has helped bring over 50 new players into the fold this season alone.
In-House Growth: For families not ready for the full commitment of travel hockey, the new Watertown Area Hockey Club provides a local development program. It focuses on teaching core skills like skating, stick-handling, and teamwork in a non-travel format.
The Rise of the “Kampeska Kraken”
One of the most exciting additions this year is the launch of the Kampeska Kraken, a local AAA summer hockey team.
High Interest: Recent tryouts for the team drew an impressive 70 participants, highlighting the growing demand for year-round hockey in the region.
Economic Impact: Watertown will also host the “World Cup of Hockey” tournament this year, a major event expected to bring hundreds of youth athletes and their families to local hotels and businesses.
Success on and off the Ice
The Lakers continue to produce high-caliber student-athletes who excel both on the court and in character. Recent individual honors include:
Sportsmanship Awards: Carson Kannas and Tucker Dahl (Squirt level) at the Tyler Wilcox Memorial Tournament in Pierre.
Player of the Game: Shey Stricherz (Girls Varsity).
Beyond accolades, the association instills a strong sense of civic responsibility. Players at the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Bantam levels are required to complete community service hours. Past efforts have included the PAC program and holiday shopping for local families in need.
Upcoming Events
The community is encouraged to visit the Prairie Lakes Ice Arena for several major events:
Chris Rieb Memorial Tournament (Jan. 24-25): This massive “Mite” level tournament features 24 teams. It honors former Laker Chris Rieb while raising funds for the Watertown Area Community Foundation.
Stick It to Cancer (Feb. 7): Now in its seventh year, this day-long event features raffles, auctions, and honorary puck drops to raise money for the Codington County Cancer Foundation. The event typically raises between $6,000 and $8,000 annually.
For schedules, registration, and more information, residents can visit www.watertownlakers.org or follow the Watertown Lakers on Facebook.
