Monday, December 8, 2025, news roundup covers a range of significant events, including a tragic fatal crash, important local traffic closures, the recognition of outstanding state park staff, and major legal developments from across the region.
Fatal Crash in Watertown & Temporary Traffic Closure
We start with unfortunate news regarding a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred last Tuesday morning (December 2nd) at the intersection of South Broadway Street and 20th Avenue Southeast in Watertown. The South Dakota Highway Patrol has identified the driver fatally injured as Antonio Davis Jr., 29, of Oceanside, California.
In related traffic news, Watertown motorists should anticipate a temporary lane closure this morning, Monday, December 8th, on the northeast corner of the 19th Street East and Willow Creek Drive/1st Avenue North intersection. The right turn lane on Willow Creek Drive will be closed as crews repair a damaged signal pole. Crews expect to have the repairs finished by the end of the day.
South Dakota State Parks Recognize Local Heroes
The State Parks Division recently held its annual awards, honoring dedicated staff and volunteers—and our region brought home top honors!
Genee Dorn was named the 2025 Seasonal Employee of the Year for her impactful work at Lake Poinsett Recreational Area near Arlington. Dorn was celebrated for her strong work ethic, her prioritization of clean facilities, and her excellent visitor satisfaction.
Robert Rutten earned the Distinguished 2025 Volunteer of the Year Award for his incredible service at Pelican Lake Recreation Area near Watertown. Rutten logged an impressive 450 hours, notably taking the initiative to single-handedly clear hundreds of trees after two severe summer storms struck the park.
Legal & Law Enforcement Updates
We cover two significant legal developments from the region:
Iroquois Aggravated Assault Indictment: South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley announced that Ace Bordeaux, 40, of Iroquois, has been indicted on one felony count of aggravated assault in connection with a November 22nd shooting. The 47-year-old victim suffered gunshot wounds. Bordeaux, who faces up to 15 years if convicted, was indicted on Friday, December 5th.
SDSU Police Chief Arrested: An SDSU Police Chief, Timothy Heaton, was arrested on five counts of cruelty to animals, a Class 6 felony, following a search warrant executed by Brookings police on December 3rd. The investigation revealed unsanitary and unheated living conditions at a home owned by Heaton, with reports indicating a significant amount of feces and structural damage inside.

We had to crank the volume up to 11 this week because we had the awesome local alternative band Chester LIVE in the studio! Meet Jaden (drums), Keegan (bass), and Quade (guitar/vocals), three young musicians who came together in Watertown and are quickly making a name for themselves.

Alternative Roots: Their love for 90s sounds (Hum, Slint, Alice in Chains) blended with influences from classic rock (Dire Straits) and funk (Red Hot Chili Peppers).
Rocker Moments: The history-making moment when Jaden broke a drumstick mid-performance of their original song "Raking the Leaves!"
We feature three awesome original tracks: "Randy," "Raking the Leaves," and the fan-favorite, "Blue Nest."

"Hope is Coming": Jo Vitek and Pastor Mark Tracy Discuss the Pure Desire Conference
This week on Northeast Radio SD, we sit down with Jo Vitek of Divine Providence of South Dakota and Pastor Mark Tracy of Cornerstone Church to discuss a critical and often-ignored community issue: sexual brokenness and the need for resources dedicated to healing.
Vitek and Pastor Tracy explain that issues like sexual addiction and distorted views of intimacy have grown rapidly, causing significant damage to relationships. They highlight that many local leaders are currently ill-equipped to help those who reach out. The solution is the Pure Desire Ministries Conference, an event designed to break down barriers, increase awareness for parents and leaders, and provide tools for genuine healing.
Key Takeaways from the Conversation:
It's for Everyone: The issue transcends faith, age, and gender. Whether you are seeking healing from a past wound, or you are a parent trying to navigate a world that "clickbaits" children into distorted views of sexuality, this event is designed for you.
A United Effort: The event showcases powerful unity in Watertown, with the Catholic Church (Holy Name of Jesus) and the Methodist Church (Cornerstone) hosting simultaneous adult events.
No Barriers to Entry: The event is free to attend, with a free meal provided. Organizers emphasize that if childcare is an issue, they are willing to provide assistance to ensure everyone who needs to be there can attend.

Representative Kent Roe (District 4, R) joined Northeast Radio SD this morning to discuss his re-election campaign and preview his legislative focus for the upcoming session, highlighting his commitment to economic development and rural infrastructure.
Background and Motivation
Roe, a Hamlin High School and SDSU graduate, described himself as a “serial entrepreneur” who returned to the Watertown area in 2006.
His entry into politics was driven by a deep interest in local and infrastructure matters, specifically in rural water in South Dakota, which he says has provided valuable experience.
He will continue to serve on the House Taxation and House Transportation Committees.
Major Legislative Focus: Data Center Legislation
Roe announced he will sponsor a bill in the House to facilitate data center development in South Dakota.
He cited a proposed project in southeastern Deuel County that would cost around $400 million, increasing the county’s tax base by 40%.
The project is estimated to generate $5 million+ in annual property tax for the county (58% for schools) and over $10 million in sales tax on electricity for the state.
He stressed that his bill aims to ensure the developer covers the costs of necessary utility and infrastructure upgrades, a process already heavily vetted by the PUC and power companies.
Economic Outlook and Budget
Roe noted that while the state is managing the transition away from COVID-era federal funding, he hopes for a favorable and unified legislative session.
He addressed the Governor’s budget proposal, which includes no salary increases for the “big three.” He suggested that sales tax revenue from the proposed data center project alone could primarily fund those increases, underscoring the benefits of economic growth.
District and Re-election
District 4 is geographically vast and diverse, spanning multiple counties from Milbank to Clark and encompassing 26 towns and 11-12 school districts.
Roe concluded by urging all constituents to exercise their right to vote.

This episode covers several critical local updates, including a tragic traffic incident investigated by the South Dakota Highway Patrol, positive news regarding passenger traffic at the Watertown Regional Airport, and a major academic honor for a Watertown High School senior.
Fatal Crash on S. Broadway Claims California Man
A two-vehicle crash at the intersection of South Broadway and 20th Avenue Southeast early Tuesday morning resulted in a fatality. According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the collision occurred at approximately 6:32 a.m. between a 2019 Ram 1500 pickup truck, driven by a 29-year-old male from Oceanside, California, and an eastbound 2006 Peterbilt semi-truck, driven by a 54-year-old Watertown man.
Preliminary reports indicate the pickup, traveling west on 20th Avenue Southeast, crossed into the eastbound lane before colliding with the semi. The California driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Watertown driver was uninjured. Watertown Fire Rescue (WFR) units were dispatched and were required to deploy the Jaws of Life to extricate the trapped driver of the pickup due to the severity of the damage. WFR crews remained on site for about 90 minutes. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is conducting a full investigation.
Watertown Airport Reports Solid November Passenger Growth
The Watertown Regional Airport is ending November with an encouraging increase in air travel. Airport Manager Ian Merriweather announced that the airport recorded 1,260 passenger boardings in November 2025.
This figure represents a 5.5% increase in passenger traffic compared to the same month last year. The passenger breakdown shows continued healthy traffic to both major hubs:
715 passengers traveled via United Express flights to Denver (DEN).
545 passengers traveled via Delta Connection flights to Minneapolis-Saint Paul (MSP).
WHS Senior Malia Kranz Receives Air Force Academy Nomination
Watertown High School senior Malia Kranz has achieved a highly competitive honor, receiving a principal nomination to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs from U.S. Senator Mike Rounds. This designation marks Kranz as the Senator's top choice candidate, ensuring her a guaranteed appointment to the academy, provided she meets all final academic, physical, and medical requirements.
Kranz is known for her exceptional performance in multiple fields:
Academics: She maintains a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Athletics: She is a two-time state champion in track and field and plays on the varsity basketball team.
Community Service: She volunteers as an Arrow Ambassador, serves on the WHS Student Council, and mentors younger students at Watertown Intermediate and Millett Elementary.
Admission to a service academy includes a full scholarship and a military commission, requiring a service commitment of at least five years upon graduation.
Ranchers Embrace Digital Marketing for Sustainable Ag
The agricultural industry in South Dakota is evolving, with ranchers increasingly adopting direct-to-consumer marketing via digital platforms. Gwen Kitzan of Kitzan Family Farms, located in western South Dakota, highlighted the shift, noting that digital sites like Facebook allow ranchers to promote products like lamb and share their farm's story, including their commitment to sustainable practices.
Kitzan, a featured speaker at this week's annual conference hosted by the South Dakota Grasslands Coalition, advises that an online presence can boost profits for tech-savvy producers. However, she cautioned that the rise of AI is complicating customer interactions by introducing misinformation. She stressed that it is crucial for producers guiding their peers in digital marketing to focus on educating prospective customers and answering all questions with clear facts. The overall sentiment is that the industry is successfully integrating this newer digital spirit while maintaining its traditional identity.

Northeast Radio SD was joined by Sarah Christianson, founder of Sarah’s Treasures Rescue, to discuss the vital mission of her 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and a critical effort underway to feed the animals in its care. Christianson, who operates the rescue while maintaining a separate full-time job, shared how her organization focuses on fostering and rehoming dogs, bringing them from often harsh beginnings to safe, loving forever homes.
The Hungry Bowl Food Drive Goal
Sarah’s Treasures Rescue is currently running its “Hungry Bowl Food Drive” with an ambitious goal of collecting 2,500 pounds of dog food by December 31st. The initiative aims to secure a six-month supply of food for the 20 to 30 dogs the organization manages at any given time.
Christiansan explained the profound need for the drive, noting that many dogs arrive from reservation communities like Cheyenne River and Lake Traverse in poor condition, having been “scrounging for scraps.” The food drive is essential, as dog food is the rescue’s second-largest expense, right after veterinary bills. She noted that as of the interview date, the drive—which began November 1st—had already raised an impressive 1,357 pounds, thanks in part to a matching donation.
A Focus on Northern Plains Communities
The rescue works extensively with local groups to pull dogs from the Northern Plains, primarily from the Cheyenne River and Lake Traverse Reservations. Christianson partners with groups like Almost Home Canine in Sioux Falls, which draws from Cheyenne River, and communicates directly with Lake Traverse Rescue, which focuses on providing spaying, neutering, and vetting services to reduce the stray population.
Christiansan emphasized that the ultimate success of the rescue is fueled by its network of dedicated foster homes, which provide all the love and care needed to prepare a dog for its final placement. She affirmed the organization’s commitment to standing behind every animal, stating they will always take a dog back into their care should tragedy strike or circumstances change for the adoptive family.
The Rehoming Process and How to Help
To ensure a safe and successful placement, Sarah’s Treasures Rescue utilizes a detailed application process that includes:
Reviewing basic information, current pets, and living style.
Checking vet references and personal references.
Conducting a home visit (via photo or video) to confirm the environment is suitable for the dog’s needs and energy level.
How the Public Can Support the Mission:
The Hungry Bowl Food Drive runs until December 31st, and donations are accepted through several channels:
Local Drop-off: Unopened bags of food can be dropped off at Critter Mart and Tractor Supply in Watertown.
Online Shopping: Food can be purchased directly from the rescue’s Amazon and Chewy wishlists, with links available on the Sarah’s Treasures Rescue Facebook page and website.
Financial Donations: The website (SarahsTreasuresRescue.net) provides links for PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, and bank/credit card transfers via the “Give Butter” platform.
Merchandise: The organization also has a storefront on Bonfire where merchandise is sold, with funds typically directed toward covering veterinary costs.
Christiansan added that while the organization is currently on an “intake hold” for the winter due to fewer available foster homes, it remains committed to its goal of helping dogs in need. She encouraged anyone with questions about fostering or dogs in crisis to reach out via their monitored Facebook page or email. https://www.facebook.com/Sarahs.Treasures.Rescue.SD
